Introduction of Guests: None
Approval of Minutes – September 11, 2017: A motion to approve the minutes by Commissioner
Mack and seconded by Commissioner Senatra was unanimously approved by the Commission.
Reports:
• Sears Warehouse-“The Q”- Depot Clock
• Jeff Anderson reported that the grand opening for the hotel is scheduled for January.
Nothing new reported on the potential for erecting the salvaged depot clock at the “Q”.
Commissioners discussed the possibility of erecting the clock somewhere within the
new riverfront development should plans at the “Q” not prove successful.
• Wilson House: Work on the house is progressing.
• Sylvan Island Bridge: Removal of the first span has taken place.
• Prospect Park pavilion –update: Commissioner Mack reported on attending a meeting
of volunteers that are seeking ways to raise funds for repairs to the pavilion. The group
is looking at possibily seeking local Landmark status for the Pavilion and Commissioner
Sandberg reported that she had all the documents that former Alderman Mike Carton
had prepared when he tried to landmark the building in 2006. She will share this with
the committee at their next meeting Oct. 12, 2017.
• Collector Center site – update: Nothing new
• Downtown Heritage tour – update: Commissioners reviewed the latest changes to the
Walk brochure and offered suggestions for modifications to Commissioner Ege and
Sandberg.
• Chase Building: Renters are now being accepted.
• Spiegel building: Request For Proposals bending.
• Fifth Avenue Building: Owners will be keeping the gray granite facade at street level
admitting it may not be original, but they were given approval from the Preservation
Agency to leave it as is.
• Carnegie Building: Nothing new.
• Recognizing David Sears: Commissioners discussed various ideas such as erecting a
informational plaque similar to several that are currently displayed along the Riverfront
bike path.
• Other: Commissioner Sandberg reported that the Rock Island County Historical Society
Board has been discussing whether to repaint the 1877 Locally Landmarked AtkinsonPeak
house or to cover it with vinyl siding.
Old Business:
• John Deere House: Commissioner Sandberg reported that she had been contacted by a
women interested in opening a Bed & Breakfast at the home. Sandberg directed her to
the home’s owner to see if he was interested in selling the property.
• Main Street/Façade rehabilitation: Nothing new.
• Garfield School: Work to begin soon on converting it into senior housing.
• Future development of Ray’s Appliance: No report.
• List of Moline’s historically and architecturally buildings –survey/inventory:
Commissioner Mizner reported he would be reviewing information already gathered
and determine how to proceed.
New Business:
Jeff Anderson suggested that the Commission seek additional ways to educate the Council, staff
and the public on the benefits derived from positive historic preservation practices.
Commissioners commented on how the redevelopment of the historic buildings in the John
Deere Commons has brought considerable economic development to the district and how this
synergism has spread to Fifth Avenue and beyond. Commissioner Senatra suggested publishing
additional booklets giving the history of various neighborhoods like Rock Island has done.
Announcements: The October 12, 2017 Riverfront Workshop has been canceled.
