The Augustana Tribe of Vikings Hall of Fame is set to induct seven new members in its 23rd class early in October.
In the Gavle Room at the Gerber Center on Oct.6, John Stanek (1976 — track & field), Lance Hofer (1983 — football), Deb Rogiers Slothower (1983 — basketball), Mary McGivern (1990 — volleyball and basketball), Mark Zemke (1996 — track & field), Bryan Welder (1997 — baseball) and Jamie Pales (2001 — wrestling) are slated to take their place among other school immortals.
According to Dispatch-Argus, that same day, the new class will also be honored at halftime during the school’s football game against North Central.
Stanek is an NCAA title holder and was the school record-holder in the high jump, while Hofer was tabbed College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin’s Most Valuable Offensive Player in 1982 in leading the Vikings to the Stagg Bowl.
Slothower, meanwhile, was a key member of the Vikings’ early 1980s teams that played in both the AIAW and NCAA national tournaments and McGivern, a two-sport star who still holds the school record for most points scored in a single game.
An All-American, Zemke was a school record-holder who in 1996 claimed an NCAA title in the 400 hurdles, while Pales posted 126 victories over his wrestling career. Welder was named Academic All-American of the Year in 1997, and by the time he had graduated had etched his name all across the Vikings’ baseball record book.
Hall of Fame night festivities start with a social hour followed by a 6:45 p.m. dinner. Tickets are priced at $35.
