River Drive at the Arsenal Bridge overpass in Moline will close on Monday, October 27, as construction crews begin the first phase of bridge demolition for the 16th Street Viaduct Rehabilitation Project. The closure is part of a larger infrastructure effort to update and improve the area.
During this stage, 4th Avenue will remain open for traffic. The Arsenal on- and off-ramps at River Drive are expected to stay accessible throughout the project. Both River Drive and 4th Avenue are scheduled to reopen temporarily during a winter shutdown in late December.
The rehabilitation project aims to replace the bridge deck, parapets, and lighting, as well as perform essential steel repairs. These updates are intended to enhance safety and connectivity in the region.
The work is supported by an $11.5 million federal grant from the Defense Community Infrastructure Program. According to officials, "this historic investment will modernize the 16th Street Viaduct and strengthen Moline’s connection to the Rock Island Arsenal."
Motorists are advised to follow posted detours and use 4th Avenue as an alternate route while construction is underway.
