FOIA Request Sent to City of Kewanee Finance Department Regarding Sales Tax Records on October 31, 2024

FOIA Request to City of Kewanee Finance Department Regarding Sales Tax Records on October 31, 2024.

In a bid to uphold transparency and accountability in local governmental affairs, we at Rock Island Today have filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with the City of Kewanee Finance Department. The request was made on October 31, 2024, seeking detailed records of city sales tax for the period from January 1, 2023, to October 31, 2024.

Specifically, we are requesting an electronic format list of businesses that paid sales tax to the city within this timeframe. The requested information includes the business name, business type, and the amount of sales tax each business paid. Additionally, we are seeking information on the total amount of sales tax that the city collected during this period.

As a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, access to these public records is crucial for us. This information will enable us to fulfill our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.

We believe as media professionals disseminating information to the public that we are eligible for a fee waiver for this request. We await a favorable response from the City of Kewanee Finance Department as we continue our work in serving our community with reliable news and information.
