The Rock Island Board of Zoning Appeals granted several variance requests on local fence codes at a recent meeting.

Jeb and Amanda Makula will be permitted to erect a seven-foot-tall fence, one foot higher than the city's allowable maximum, to shield themselves from two adjacent car-service businesses

Jamie and Joy McDonald will be permitted to keep their front-yard fence, which is six inches higher than code allows, because of an in-home daycare business operated at the property. The McDonalds also will be permitted to add on a one-story addition that will enlarge the home's kitchen

Alphonso Dickerson was given permission to keep two trailers and a Dumpster on his property for up to six months. Dickerson's second request for permission to permanently locate a commercial Dumpster on his property so that it can continue serving as a neighborhood recycling drop-off location was not addressed by the board's vote.
