Brandi McGuire, Republican candidate for House District 72, recently criticized Sen. John Cullerton’s mileage tax proposal, declaring that citizens “oppose this … government intrusion, and we will be heard.”
Cullerton’s plan would require drivers to pay a per-mile fee beginning in July 2017. It also would create a new government commission to monitor cars registered in the state and rely on the state to issue rebates for taxes already paid when refueling.
Campaigning on the basis of needed reforms, McGuire said local citizens need extra services, not extra taxes. She deplored Illinois’ already high property and gas taxes.
“Our legislators are too busy promoting bills, raising our taxes and pushing for ridiculous legislation like banning the sale of bobcat pelts, cross-bow hunting of coyotes and now raising prices at the gas pumps,” McGuire said. “We are reminded every day that they are not doing their jobs by the fact that our state government has no budget.”
McGuire cited the state’s unemployment rate as “unacceptable” and condemned the so-called Motor Fuel Tax plan as “outrageous,” urging constituents to join her in opposing the proposal backed by Cullerton and House Speaker Michael Madigan.
“I am running to be your state representative in Springfield; I am running to be your voice in Springfield," McGuire said. "Please join me in voicing opposition to this anti-citizen and anti-American legislation. Let's stand up together and tell Senate President Cullerton and House Speaker Madigan that enough is enough.”
