Republican candidate Tony McCombie, running for a House seat in District 71 of Rock Island, sharply derided Speaker Mike Madigan’s recent session suspension, stating that his constituents are “suffering” from the lack of Illinois’ budget resolution.
“Yesterday, Speaker Madigan cancelled another scheduled House session,” McCombie said via her Facebook page. “These sessions are an opportunity for lawmakers to sit down and bring together a balanced budget. The number-one concern among voters I've talked to over the last couple of weeks is the lack of a state budget.”
Madigan cancelled the scheduled House session this week for the second consecutive time, spurring unrest among various factions, including GOP spokesman Steven Yaffe, who also commented on the Speaker’s apparent “abandonment” of Illinois citizens “in his desperate attempt to force a tax hike and prevent reform.”
McCombie, who currently serves as mayor of Savanna, characterized the scenario as a fiasco.
“People within the 71st District are suffering at the hands of the budget impasse,” she said. “We need someone who wants to put in the time necessary to reach an effective and balanced compromise -- we need someone who is willing to do the work.”
