House Republican Leader Jim Durkin (R) Sponsored HB House Bill 3259 To Fund Domestic Violence Shelters
The Illinois House voted unanimously at the end of May to restore and appropriate funding to domestic violence shelters for the 2017 fiscal year, but the measure was still awaiting a vote in the Senate as fiscal year 2018 began July 1.
House Bill 3259 would provide $18 million in funding to the Domestic Violence Shelters and Services Program. Funds would be directed to many domestic violence shelters that haven’t received money in more than 10 months.
If passed in the Senate, the legislation would charge the Commitment to Human Services Fund with directing funds to the program.
HB3259 had more than 80 co-sponsors in the House, including Reps. Tony McCombie (R-Savanna), Sheri Jesiel (R-Winthrop Harbor), John Cavaletto (R-Salem) and House Minority Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs).
The program did not receive funding under the stop-gap budget approved last year.
