City of Aledo Historic Preservation Commission met July 18.

Here is the minutes provided by the Commission:

The Historic Preservation Commission of the City of Aledo met in Open Session in Council Chambers of the City Hall building on July 18, 2017. Chairman Dillavou called the meeting to order at 6:48pm. The roll was called whereupon the following committee members answered present:

Committee Members Gerrod Andresen, Keith Clark, Ronn Dillavou, and Verla Thompson answered present. Also in attendance was Economic Development Coordinator Tarah Sipes. Committee Members Keith Chandler, Jim Holmes, Peggy Scranton, Mayor Chris Hagloch and City Administrator Erin Knackstedt were excused.

Approval of Minutes: A motion to accept the minutes of the May 16, 2017 meeting as submitted was made by Thompson, Clark gave the second. Unanimous voice vote approved the minutes as submitted.

Old Business:

Tourist Information Racks: Sipes will be working to get the racks to the Slammer and Blue Spruce in the next 2 weeks. Clark will retrieve brochures from the Museum and will bring them to City Hall this week.

Antique Days/ ADHD Celebration: Sipes reported that City Clerk Dale has ordered the dedication plaque. Dillavou asked if the Mayor had decided on what the remarks would focus on during the dedication ceremony. Due to being out of the office in recent weeks SIPES could not give further information on the topic. Sipes will follow up with Mayor Hagloch on the topic. The subject of handouts was discussed. Andresen moved that we select the 2.25” button, THOMPSON seconded. Knackstedt, Sipes, and Hagloch may do as they wish with the design. Thompson wrote a check to contribute to the cost of the order.

Committee Reports:

National Register Subcommittee: No Report

Public Awareness Subcommittee: Dillavou and Sipes presented to Mercer County Women for Women in June. The presentation was well received and a thank you was received from the organization. The committee would like to present to City Council next.

Technical Assistance Subcommittee: No Report

Property/Building Inventory Subcommittee: The committee is open to additional leads on potential sources of information.

Monument Park Subcommittee: The assessment conducted by US Heritage Group was discussed. The group was pleased that the results were overall positive as to the condition of the monument. Dillavou asked what the next steps would be on the project. At the time of the meeting Sipes was

unsure whether the report had been presented to City Council. This would be the next step and further actions could be determined after the presentation.

New Business:

Planning Discussion – Sipes asked the committee to consider conducting a planning exercise for future Historic Preservation Commission efforts on behalf of the City of Aledo. This plan would support goals contained in the Economic Development Strategic Plan and help to guide the work of the commission. Potential items for consideration during creation of the plan include signage for historic districts, future historic districts or site designations, and a recognition program (either through community nomination or through criteria established by the commission). Dillavou mentioned that he would like to have a file of information for each building (digital) that we have in district so that future owners, etc., have as much information as possible. This information could also be used for marketing of the properties in the event of turn-over. There is potential for research volunteers at the Museum. DILLAVOU will bring a work plan/scope for the creation of files to the next meeting. SIPES will bring examples of what other cities have by way of Historic Preservation planning documents.

Next Meeting: Tuesday, August 8th at 6:45pm.

Adjournment: A motion to adjourn the meeting was received of Andresen, Thompson seconded. A unanimous voice vote confirmed adjournment at 7:35pm.
