Old Business:
Committee Reports and Updates:
The commission will continue to identify projects for KMB. Rodd will email the Goals/Objectives updated
worksheets, the KMB mission statement and our KMB materials which were submitted to Keep America
Beautiful to the KMB commission members so that we will have information at-the-ready when grants become
available.
City Update: Susan suggested Western Illinois University as a Recycle Super Hero nominee; she will write
up the nomination and Rodd will identify a representative for the November 14th City Council Committee of
the Whole meeting presentation and Kristen will arrange to have another award sculpture created. Lori
informed the commission that twenty apple trees to be planted on Oct 7th using the recent $5,000.00 UPS
partnership grant for a community apple tree garden in Miss Patty’s Park was postponed to later in the
month due to continual weather problems on the Saturday plant dates. Since it is a UPS partnership grant,
volunteerism by UPS employees during the planting is a key component of the project that Lori, Rodd and
Greg would like to facilitate so they will try for the next two following Saturdays. Lori and KMB worked
with Heritage Landscape and the City forester, Greg Masias, to choose varieties including yellow delicious,
Zester, Gala and Honey Crisp. Lori will write a press release. Lori informed the Commission of the followup
report that must be submitted for the grant completion including reporting on final number of trees
planted, varieties, size and caliper of trees, media outreach and volunteers involved. Greg and Rodd reported
that several neighborhood partnership cleanups were conducted in Floreciente, Stephens Park, and the Bluff
neighborhoods.
Garden Guardians: Greg reported that the electrical box is still lying exposed in the KMB garden -- Greg will
check again with the City electrician about the problem. Greg will also look into the new grass netting along
the Butterworth Park path Neighborhood.
QC Earth Coalition Update: Kristen attended the meeting and reported an idea of a passport that children will
get stamped to tie Quad City organizations together is being discussed. Rodd said Moline would like to
participate with stamps available along Moline trails too.
Xstream Cleanup Update: Kristen reported that Sierra Club, in partnership with KMB, Xstream Cleanup and
American Rivers, organized a river cleanup on the Mississippi on September 16th; ten bags of trash and 1
bag of recycling were collected by 18 volunteers along the Butterworth Parkway. Kristen will send Rodd
photos to add to the KMB Facebook page.
New Business:
Rodd reported that the Midland Davis City recycling contract expires in March 2018; a new contract will go out for bid in December. Rodd noted that the City is investigating the cost of single stream recycling (including glass) in the new bids; single stream and including glass in a new program will help with the problem of contamination in cans. Rodd will email the information about the City’s green cart yard waste subscription program out to KMB members so that KMB can help educate and get the word out to the community about this green cart program too.
A motion was made to adjourn the meeting at 5:30pm. Motion seconded and passed.
Next meeting will be at 4:30pm, Thursday, November 9th, 2017 at the Moline Municipal Services Building.
