Andrew Chesney, a Freeport Republican running in the GOP primary in the 89th House District, said he supports legislation that would cap property taxes and give local taxpayers a say on tax increases.

“Each government entity would have to go to the voters to approve tax increases,” Chesney says on his website. “I believe that this leads to a more accountable local government. Property taxes are too high and these high taxes result in a decline in property value.”

Chesney wrote that families and businesses in Illinois pay some of the highest property taxes in the nation and the state has one of the largest numbers of government bodies on a per capita basis.

“We have a state government that taxes us through the income tax and the sales tax and redistributes those funds in a way that deprives the people of the 89th District their fair share of the taxes paid in," Chesney wrote. "An equitable return of tax dollars from the state takes pressure off of local taxing bodies.”

The 89th House District includes parts of Carroll, Jo Daviess, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago counties.
