Rock Island responds to 99 fires in 2017

Rock Island responded to 387 calls in 2017 - 10.6 percent less than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Rock Island included 99 fires - 43 structure fires, 26 vehicle fires and 30 other fires. The fire department also responded to 25 calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $1,761,603 in fire loss - or about $17,794 per fire.

The department also received 263 false calls, including 13 malicious calls and 250 other false calls.

The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related injury. Additionally, two fire service members were injured in fire-related incidents.

The Rock Island Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 58 active employees and 91 retired or inactive employees, was $2,300,113 in debt as of December 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $20,176 for every fire in 2016.
