Rock Island Republicans believe the area needs to be a safe place for gun owners.
Voters around the state have seen referendums establishing their counties as “gun sanctuaries,” or safe spaces for the Second Amendment and gun owners. The move is similar to sanctuary cities, which are areas of the country that refuse to cooperate with the federal government on immigration issues.
Now, the Rock Island GOP has been pushing for change in its corner of Illinois when it comes to the rights of firearm owners.
“Rock Island County patriots — let's try to move Rock Island county forward and make Rock Island county blue then GREEN,” the group posted on Facebook, referring to a map that shows where each county stands.
Thirty-nine other counties in the state have already thrown their support behind preserving the right to bear arms and many more are expected to follow.
