Colona School District 190 Board met Aug. 9.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

Present: Julie Wittenauer, Ray Kutzman, Ricky McClintock , Lindsey Trickey, Bill Rossow, Julie Woods and Dennis Teichman

Also Present: Carl Johnson, Mike Carlson, Chrissy Winters and Jessica Teichman

The PTA report noted they hosted a welcome back Chick-Fil-A lunch for teachers and staff at the August 6th Inservice. The PTA is hoping to get 100% Board and Staff membership to the PTA this year. The blood drive will be August 20th in the bus out front in the parking lot. We need 20 donors to receive a $250.00 life savings grant from the Mississippi Valley Blood Center. The PTA would like to do some fundraising to replace the aging wood playground equipment and more details will follow in the future. The Craft Show is October 20th.

The Principal report noted several community members have donated school supplies and funds for this school year. The first day of school was August 7th. The Professional Development on August 6th included Safe and Civil Schools, Teach Like a Pirate and MobyMax intervention training. The August 31st PD will including reading strategies. The Jr. High Science books have arrived. There is new reading intervention materials being considered for purchase. Map Testing will begin the last 2 weeks of August. 12 teachers received new Apple Macbook Pro’s.

The Athletic Director noted Mr. Dittmar will be the volleyball coach for 5th – 8th grade teams. The 5th graders are allowed to tryout this year due to the low numbers in 6th and 7th grade. Practices will begin next week. Our football cooperative has filled all four coaching positions. We have dropped out of the Heartland Conference and have games scheduled against Orion, Bureau Valley and Mercer County and are working to finalize dates against Glenview and Jr. Pioneers. Cross Country begins next week and we are still in need of a coach.

The maintenance report noted general maintenance was performed. Informational Items: 1. ECE Grant and Title I 1003(a)

A Motion was made by Dennis Teichman, seconded, by Ray Kutzman to approve Consent Agenda, which included the following items:

5a. Approval of Regular Board Meeting Minutes from July 19, 2018

5b. Approval of Closed Session Board Meeting Minutes from July 19, 2018 5c. Approval of Employment of Staff:

1. Non-Certified Staff: Troy Dennison for mowing 5d. Approval of Resignation of Staff:

2. Bookkeeper – Connie McElyea

5e. Approval of Closed Session Status of all Minutes for January, March, April, May, and June 2018.

5g. Approval of August 2018 Bills and Estimated Payments to be made prior to August 31st, District Treasurer’s Report and approval of the July Activity Fund

A Motion was made by Dennis Teichman, Seconded by, Ray Kutzman to close the regular session of the board and convene a FY 2019 Colona School Dist 190 Tentative Budget hearing at 6:50p.m.

Roll Call Vote: Wittenauer – aye; McClintock – aye; Kutzman – aye; Trickey - aye; Woods – aye; Rossow – aye; Teichman – aye; 7 ayes; no nays, Motion carried

Dr. Johnson spoke to the board about the Colona School Dist 190 FY 19 Tentative budget and explained that it will be on public display until the next board meeting on September 13, 2018.

A Motion was made by Ricky McClintock, Seconded by, Lindsey Trickey to close the tentative FY 19 Colona School Dist 190 Budget hearing and convene the regular meeting of the board at 6:55 p.m.

Roll Call Vote: Wittenauer – aye; McClintock – aye; Kutzman – aye; Trickey - aye; Woods – aye; Rossow – aye; Teichman – aye; 7 ayes; no nays, Motion carried

A Motion was made by Dennis Teichman, Seconded by, Rickey McClintock to approve the Colona School Dist 190 FY 19 Tentative budget, as presented.

Dr. Johnson discussed the District Health Life Safety Projects. There are 16 heating and cooling units left to replace and the price has increased 15% - 20%. It is possible we may have to replace more than the 4 that are scheduled to be replaced this year.

Dr. Johnson discussed the legislative update. It appears that the $40,000 starting salary for teachers is a dead issue at this point in time.

New Business or any Other Appropriate Business:

a. Leah Roberts is consulting with Chrissy Winters on the SDS Software and daily operations of the bookkeeper, as needed.

b. IDOT Safe Route to School – Look into grants. Fire Chief Swan would help in the process along with other City of Colona Officials.

A Motion was made by Dennis Teichman, seconded by, Lindsey Trickey to enter in closed session for Discussion of Appointment, Employment, Compensation, Discipline, Performance or Dismissal of Specific Employees Pursuant to 5 ILCS 120/2 (c)(1)

The Board entered closed session at 7:16 p.m.

A Motion was made by Dennis Teichman, seconded by Ray Kutzman to return to open session at 7:32 p.m.

Mr. Johnson explained that Kelly Larson has accepted a position with Mississippi Bend AEA and resigned as the Speech Language Pathologist.

A Motion was made by Ray Kutzman, seconded by, Julie Woods to accept the resignation of Kelly Larson.

A Motion was made by Julie Woods, Seconded by, Dennis Teichman to approve employement of Kay Cook as Crossing Guard and Andrea Arnold as Cafeteria Staff.

A Motion was made by Dennis Teichman, Seconded by Ray Kutzman to approve the Memorandum of Understanding for Custodians, from the Colona Education Association, to be added to the 2016 – 2019 Collective Barganing Agreement between The Board of Education of Colona School Dist 190 and The Colona Education Association Educational Support Personnel Contract.

A Motion was made by Dennis Teichman, seconded by Bill Rossow to adjourn meeting.

Having noted that all agenda items had been discussed, the meeting adjourned at 7:38 p.m.
