UNITYPOINT HEALTH BOARD OF DIRECTORS - QUAD CITIES: Endowment Supporting Pancreatic Cancer Patients gets Funding Boost

A

UnityPoint Health Board of Directors - Quad Cities recently issued the following announcement.

There’s more help for local pancreatic cancer patients and their families thanks to community efforts and generous contributions. The Dr. Brent Ohl Strong Pancreatic Cancer Support Endowment through the UnityPoint Health® – Trinity Health Foundation is helping local families facing many struggles that come with this aggressive disease. Recently, another $15,000 was added to the endowment.

Members of UnityPoint Health® – Trinity, Trinity Health Foundation, and the Ohl Strong Committee gathered at the Moline Cancer Center on November 27 to present the additional funds. The endowment was created in honor of Dr. Brent Ohl who practiced anesthesiology with Western Illinois Anesthesiology at UnityPoint Health – Trinity. After his passing from pancreatic cancer in 2016, his wife Peggy wanted to do something in his honor.

“I just felt I wanted to do something for people locally and I wanted to be able to help them. It happens so fast you don’t even have time to think about what you’re doing and apply for help,” says Peggy Ohl.

In October, most of this latest contribution to the endowment was raised at a single event. The support goes toward non-medical expenses for families such as meal vouchers, fuel vouchers and reimbursement for hotel/motel accommodations.

“This really helps our patients that have been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and their families through those rough times. It’s a very devastating disease,” says Alison Beardsley, Director of Oncology Services.

With the addition of $15,000, about $41,000 has been raised for the endowment to date.

“We’re so appreciative of this team and all they have done to make a difference for our patients,” says Pat Shouse, President of Trinity Health Foundation.

The UnityPoint Health Oncology Program at Trinity Cancer Center is dedicated to raising community awareness related to cancer to improve quality of life in our Quad Cities community.
