BRIAN M. KILONZO, MD: Construction Begins On Jackson County Regional Health Center

Pa220013

Brian M. Kilonzo, MD recently issued the following announcement.

Jackson County Regional Health Center will adapt to changing health care needs of the communities it serves by building a new health center.

Participating in a ceremonial groundbreaking today for the 13-bed, $36.8 million center were Jackson County and Maquoketa leaders, and health center administration and staff.

The new health center will be located on 17th Street in Maquoketa.

“This will be a modern, new facility in a new era for the delivery of health care,’’ said Curt Coleman, president of Jackson County Regional Health Center. “We’re in the midst of rapid, significant change in healthcare as more care is provided outside of traditional acute care beds.

“We envision and have planned this new health center to meet the needs of our patients today and into the future.

“Our present health center has served the communities very well since 1950 but now has become outdated. We found after thorough study it would not be cost-effective to attempt to again renovate a hospital-centric building at a time when care is moving from hospitals to outpatient locations.’’

Since opening in 1950, the existing Jackson County Regional Health Center has undergone additions and updates in 1966, 1979, 2001 and 2004. There have been additional maintenance projects and renovations in recent years.

Many rural health centers, including Jackson County Regional Health Center, have experienced a dramatic shift of patient care from inpatient settings to outpatient settings.

For example, inpatient revenue is now less than 7% of total revenue for Jackson County Regional Health Center. Outpatient revenue is more than 93%.

“This will be a different, one-stop and modern health center, which will reflect not only community needs, but will reflect the center’s natural surroundings,’’ Coleman said.

BWBR Architects of St. Paul, Minn., is the architect. Findorff Construction of Madison, Wis., is the construction manager.

Jackson County Regional Health Center is county-owned. Genesis Health System, Davenport, manages the center and staff.
