Mercer County has issued a county disaster declaration due to the coronavirus pandemic.
County Board Chairman Carlos Sarabasa signed the declaration, which was filed with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. This disaster declaration will allow the county to access the Mercer County Emergency Operations Plan and the Emergency Operations Center, according to the Aledo Times Record.
Director Angie Litterst of the Mercer County Office of Emergency Management said the disaster declaration will help protect county residents and keep them healthy.
“Our primary objective is to protect the health and safety of the residents, employees, and visitors of Mercer County," Litterst told the newspaper. "The understanding and support we’ve received from this community as daily life has been altered and difficult decisions have been made is greatly appreciated,"
As of May 9, Illinois reported 73,760 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 3,241 deaths. Mercer County has 11 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
