The Illinois General Assembly is mulling over two pieces of legislation relating to Firearm Owners Identification cards, applications for which have experienced a recent boost and one at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic more than a year ago.

One of the bills is attributed to the Gun Violence Prevention PAC, which pertains to illegal ownership and fixing the FOID system, while the other, Senate Bill 1165, looks to streamline the FOID process, WICS/WRSP reported.

State Sen. Neil Anderson (R-Moline) asserted that the legislation does not provide a complete solution.

"The problem still remains that it is not fixing the root problem, which is why I believe we need to talk about my repeal the FOID legislation,” Anderson posted on Facebook on April 15“The FOID card is a blatant assault on people’s Second Amendment Right to protect themselves and to keep and bear arms.”

WICS/WRSP reported a recent influx in FOID card applications similar to the jump at the start of the coronavirus crisis, with 19,594 submissions and 14,847 renewals for March.

The bipartisan SB 1165 was written to make the FOID process quicker and more modernized. For now, the bill has stalled in the Senate.

Gun Violence Prevention PAC’s measure would require background checks for all gun sales and fingerprints would be required for FOID applicants.
