Rep. Mike Halpin (D-Rock Island) was pleased to have attended the House Redistricting Committee hearing for Western Illinois.
He thanked the committee for providing another opportunity to hold a hearing for his district.
“I do thank you. I just want to thank the redistricting committee for offering to have this virtual hearing. We were blessed to have an in-person (hearing) earlier in the month but unfortunately it was on the busy Easter weekend and I think that may have prevented some folks from coming out that would have otherwise been there, so I just want to thank the committee again,” Halpin said. “This is a very important issue.”
He added that participating in the redistricting process and being able to provide some feedback to the committee was something his constituents have told him they want to do.
"I'm looking forward to having some of our local citizens provide some feedback to the committee as we continue this process," he said.
The Senate Redistricting Committee leaders have said that they are also in favor of having communities of interest throughout the state participate in this process.
The Illinois constitution sets June 30 as the deadline for new legislative maps to be drawn. If the legislature fails to meet to do so, a bipartisan commission will be appointed to handle the task.
