State Rep. Dan Swanson (R-Alpha) recently received an honorary FFA degree, according to a news release from his office.
Swanson received the degree at the 94th annual Illinois FFA (formerly Future Farmers of America) State Convention. This year's convention was held from June 14 to 16; each day was packed with events and discussions, as the agenda showed.
FFA president Adam Loker presented the honorary degrees to the recipients.
"On behalf of every member, I wish to say that we are proud to have you as honorary FFA degree holders," Loker said at the event, as shown on YouTube. "I impress upon you that we look to you for counsel and guidance. It is because of the great respect that we have for you that you have been bestowed your honorary FFA degree. May we always cooperate with the benefit of all. I now confer upon you your honorary degree in the Illinois Association FFA for the 2020 and 2022 recipients."
Swanson is a hog farmer and member of the Agriculture and Conservation Committee.
"It is an honor to be recognized by the next generation of farmers and agriculture leaders in the FFA organization," he said, according to the news release. "I am in very good company with the other state degree recipients from the families of student leaders, business owners, and other elected officials who support these young men and women in agriculture."
Illinois FFA "is a dynamic youth organization that changes lives and prepares members for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education," according to the group's website. "Illinois FFA develops members’ potential and helps them discover their talent through hands-on experiences, which give members the tools to achieve real-world success. FFA is not just for students who want to be production farmers; FFA also welcomes members who aspire to careers as teachers, doctors, scientists, business owners, and more.
"Illinois FFA members are future chemists, veterinarians, government officials, entrepreneurs, bankers, international business leaders, teachers, and premier professionals in many career fields. FFA is an extracurricular student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership. The official name of the organization is the Illinois Association FFA."
