The Illinois Republican Party is hoping to flip the 17th Congressional District in 2024.

That seat is currently held by Democrat Eric Sorensen, a former meteorologist.

“Back in November, the American people sent a new Republican majority to the House to chart a new path for our country…,” the Illinois GOP said in a fundraising email. “Here in Illinois, we’re proud to have conservative leaders representing our great state in Washington. But there is a challenge…”

The GOP pointed out “There is one district in particular that is CRUCIAL to FLIP to ensure that we keep our narrow five-seat majority in the House: The 17th District.”

“Described as one of the most vulnerable districts in Illinois and in the country, Eric Sorensen is the current Democratic Congressman for the District," the Illinois GOP stated. "While he claims to represent Illinois values, he is nothing more than a rubber stamp vote for Biden and his failed liberal policies that are hurting our state and country.”

Sorensen voted against the creation of the United States House Judiciary Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government which is investigating an alleged censorship campaign helmed by the United States’ intelligence community. The subcommittee, according to Rock Island Today, has been investigating what it calls censorship of information posted to social media websites. The subcommittee was created on Jan. 10 on a 221-211 vote.

The Washington Examiner is running allegations from a political rival that Sorensen is using a secret Facebook account – Cire Nesneros– to post anti-police messaging.

“Eric Sorensen is nothing more than an anti-police radical,” NRCC Spokeswoman Courtney Parella said, based on the allegations.

"In February 2021, Cire Nesneros posted images of graffiti he observed on a hike," according to another post obtained by the Washington Examiner. "The phrase 'ACAB,' which stands for the political slogan ‘All Cops Are B*******,’ was painted in blue next to the phrase ‘Fascist Pig.’” the Washington Examiner reported.
