WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Eric Sorensen (IL-17) co-led the introduction of the bipartisan Invest to Protect Act, which supports small and midsize police departments by providing resources to improve officer recruitment, retention, mental health, and training.

“Our law enforcement officers are tasked with doing a lot with few resources. To lower crime and improve police-community relations, we must come together in a bipartisan way,” said Sorensen. “The Invest to Protect Act is the right way forward, providing much-needed investments for officers who keep our communities safe.”

The bill invests in training to improve policing, creates grants to recruit and retain officers, and allows departments to offer much-needed mental health resources, among other things.

Sorensen’s support of the Invest to Protect Act accompanies his vote this week to honor fallen police officers. The Invest to Protect Act was introduced and passed the House of Representatives last Congress. Text of the legislation can be found here.

Congressman Eric Sorensen is the first openly LGBTQ person elected to represent Illinois at the federal level and is a member of the New Democrat Coalition. He serves on the House Committee on Agriculture and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Prior to serving in Congress, Sorensen was a local meteorologist in Rockford and the Quad Cities for nearly 20 years. His district includes Illinois’ Quad Cities, Rockford, Peoria, and Bloomington-Normal.
