Illinois Representative Dan Swanson provided an update on various important issues in his recent Capitol News Update. One of the key topics discussed was the efforts of the Lyme disease task force to educate Illinoisans about the prevention and treatment of Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is a serious illness that can be misdiagnosed if its early symptoms are not properly recognized. To address this issue, Illinois established a Lyme disease task force composed of public health officials and policymakers. The task force's main objective is to educate Illinoisans about the dangers of Lyme disease and equip them with the knowledge to diagnose and prevent it.

During Lyme disease awareness month earlier this year, the Department of Public Health (IDPH) shared valuable information with the public on ways to protect themselves and their families from Lyme and other tick-borne illnesses. The IDPH also provides a tick surveillance map that can help individuals identify if they may be suffering from a tick-borne illness.

Representative Swanson emphasized the importance of the task force's work and announced his intention to collaborate with a bipartisan group to raise awareness about their efforts. His goal is to ensure the ongoing protection of Illinoisans from Lyme disease.

In addition to the Lyme disease task force, Representative Swanson also addressed other significant topics. He highlighted the positive news of increased tax receipts in September, primarily driven by higher income and sales tax payments. Personal income tax payments rose by $244 million compared to the previous year, while sales tax receipts increased by $44 million.

However, there were also concerning findings from an audit conducted by the Auditor General regarding the Illinois Department of Corrections (DOC). The audit revealed that the DOC failed to notify victims and law enforcement when releasing convicted sex offenders. The DOC is legally required to inform law enforcement about the release of certain offenders, but the audit found that progress reports were not submitted as mandated. The audit also identified deficiencies in reporting profits from commissary funds and failure to meet training requirements.

The Auditor General regularly conducts audits of state agencies to assess their performance and compliance with state law. Recent audits have highlighted shortcomings in agencies such as the Department of Children and Family Services, the Departments of Human Services, Public Health, and the State Board of Education.

Finally, Representative Swanson encouraged everyone to stay updated on the fall veto session, which will take place in Springfield next week. During this session, legislators will review bills vetoed by the Governor over the summer. Additionally, issues such as changes to the no-cash-bail law and the extension of the Invest in Kids scholarship program may also be discussed.

Illinoisans can access daily schedules of the session and watch live session and committee hearings to stay informed.

In conclusion, Representative Dan Swanson's Capitol News Update highlighted the efforts of the Lyme disease task force to educate Illinoisans about the prevention and treatment of Lyme disease. The update also addressed positive economic news, concerns regarding the Department of Corrections' failure to notify authorities about released sex offenders, and the upcoming fall veto session. It is crucial for Illinois residents to stay informed about these important matters that affect their daily lives and well-being.
