A new legislative proposal aims to assist beginning farmers in Illinois by providing state tax incentives. The bill, introduced this spring, seeks to ensure the continuity of family-owned farms by encouraging young people to enter the farming industry and supporting retiring farmers.
The proposed legislation would offer state tax incentives to landowners who rent their farms to new farmers. This initiative complements existing federal incentives for starting a farm. "My bill will provide state tax incentives for a landowner who wants to help a beginning farmer get started," stated the proponent of the bill.
The development of this bill involved collaboration with various entities, including the Department of Revenue, the Farm Bureau, and the Department of Agriculture. "I’ve been working with the Department of Revenue, the Farm Bureau and the Department of Agriculture to get their input and to put together a program that will help those who want to get started in agriculture," explained the legislator.
The bill is expected to be assigned to a committee in the coming weeks as it progresses through legislative channels.
