State Senator Neil Anderson has successfully sponsored legislation to address wildlife nuisance challenges impacting farmers and producers in Illinois' 47th Senate District. The bill, known as Senate Bill 710, was unanimously passed by the State Senate on Thursday.
Senator Anderson emphasized the importance of addressing agricultural concerns: “Agriculture is Illinois’ leading industry, and when experts in the field raise concerns, it’s our responsibility as lawmakers to find real solutions.” He highlighted that deer overpopulation affects both agriculture and public safety.
The proposed legislation aims to simplify and expand access to hunting permits for landowners and tenants. Key features include automatic issuance of extra antlerless-only permits during hunting seasons for those meeting specific harvest thresholds, free deer and turkey permits for qualifying landowners or tenants with at least 40 acres, expanded use of nuisance permits allowing designated hunters on problem properties, and guest permit access for larger landowners.
“This bill is a result of collaboration with local farm bureaus, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and the Illinois Farm Bureau,” Senator Anderson stated. He noted that this legislative effort is a first step towards ongoing dialogue with the agricultural community.
In addition to supporting farmers, Anderson pointed out the public safety benefits: reducing deer populations near roadways could help decrease deer-related vehicle accidents. “This bill supports our farmers but also looks out for everyday Illinoisans who drive our roads,” he said.
The bill will now proceed to the House for further consideration.
