The Illinois General Assembly is set to reconvene in Springfield for its annual two-week Veto Session, scheduled from October 14-16 and October 28-30. The primary purpose of the session is to review legislation passed during the spring that has received either a total or amendatory veto from the Governor. Lawmakers can attempt to override a veto with a three-fifths majority in each chamber or choose to accept an amendatory veto.

In addition to addressing vetoed bills, the Veto Session often includes discussion of significant policy matters that were not resolved earlier in the year or have emerged over the summer. This year, legislators may address a potential bailout for Chicagoland mass transit agencies facing a substantial budget deficit of more than $770 million, as well as consider new green energy initiatives.

Swanson, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 to represent the state's 71st House District, replacing previous state representative Donald L. Moffitt.
