Moline Historic Preservation Commission meets to review plans

The Moline Historic Preservation Commission met at 4 p.m. Monday, May 9.

The commission promotes the educational, cultural, and economic welfare of the city and its residents by pursuing the identification and preservation of the community’s historically significant resources. The commission meets at 4 p.m on the second Monday of each month.

Introduction of Guests: Mayor Scott Raes; Diann Moore

Approval of Minutes from April 11, 2016: On a motion by Commissioner Sandburg (second, Commissioner Perkins) the minutes of the April meeting were approved.

Election of Officers: The following officers were elected:

Chairman: Dick Potter

Vice Chair: Jolene Keeney

Recording Secretary: Barbara Sandberg Roseman resigned from the Commission and recommended Carm Senatra as a replacement.

Reports:

* DRI &NE Depot: Commissioner Potter will contact Valley Construction about further salvaging possibilities.

* Sears Warehouse - “The Q”: Anderson reported that bid package number 3 will go out to bid. Mayor Raes reported that the hotel and other structural work will be completed by the end of this year, but is not sure if Amtrak will come.

* Wilson House: nothing new

* Sylvan Island Bridge: The mussel study has been completed and the work on a replacement bridge will start in 2017.

* Prospect Park Pavilion: Shive Hattery will provide a report to the City council tomorrow. Their report has five parts.

* City Comprehensive Plan: A final draft report is due next week.

* Collector Center Site: Developers interest has not yet been revealed.

* Downtown Heritage Tour: Sandberg reported that the tour, both on foot and on the Web, will be launched on May 14. She presented details of the walk, which will involve actors at four downtown locations, including Model printers,

Lagomarcinos, Matty Poole’s business, and the Bellson store building.

* National Geographic Mississippi River Geotourism: nothing new

* Chase Building: nothing new

* Scottish Rite Cathedral - 1800 7th Ave: is still for sale

* Spiegel (Eagle Signal) Building: Development proposals are being sought

* Other: Sandberg reported that Pat Burke is now working in Carpendersville.

Old Business:

* John Deere House and 12th Street retaining wall: The new wall on 12th Street is nearing completion.

* Main Street/Facade Rehabilitation: nothing new

* Garfield School - National Landmark Application: Anderson requested that all Commissioners send him comments on the National Register nomination form for Garfield School.

* Future development of Ray’s Appliance site: Anderson suggested that federal help might help with an infill development.

* List of Moline’s historically and architecturally survey/inventory: Roseman will turn over to Commissioner Mizner the materials that have been collected thusfar.

* Annual Report Information: Anderson asked for information for the

Commission’s annual report and requested that all Commissioners send to him comments on the National Register nomination form for Garfield School.

New Business:

* LeClaire Apartments: The Commission might have to review possible new signs on first floor.

Announcements:

The Commission might apply for award for the downtown walk with the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions.
