Sherrard Community Unit School District 200 students suspended, expelled 90 times in a single school year

Sherrard Community Unit School District 200 reported three expulsions and 87 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 90 students during the year. That equates to 6.2 percent of the 1,459 students enrolled.

Students were expelled for one incident with drugs, one incident with a dangerous weapon, other than a firearm and one incident with unspecified reasons.

Of the 47 in-school suspensions, including 27 elementary or middle schoolers and 20 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 42 incidents. There were four incidents of violence without physical injury. For 31 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 40 out-of-school suspensions, including 12 elementary or middle schoolers and 28 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 31 incidents. There were three incidents of alcohol. For 12 incidents, students were suspended for 1-3 days.
