The holidays are a time for joy and togetherness, but it can be tough for the families who are spending time in the hospital. Having special visitors can help bring the feeling of the season to patients and their loved ones who can’t be at home.
That’s exactly what some members of the Quad City Storm hoped to provide with a trip to the UnityPoint Health ® – Trinity Bettendorf pediatric unit. Hockey players Al Graves and Tommy Tsicos donned their jerseys and blue Santa hats to go room to room spreading holiday cheer to patients and their families.
“Dropping off a few gifts for the kids and tickets. Just trying to brighten up their day a little bit. I know it’s tough probably for the family and kids to be in here especially around Christmas,” says Tsicos.
Other members of the team came along to snap photographs and give words of encouragement as well. Their visit provided some much-needed excitement for even the youngest patients.
“The kids were pretty happy to see us. There were a couple babies and they don’t really get the whole hockey thing I guess, but they were still smiling,” says Tsicos. “This gives them a little break from their situation, so it’s nice.”
Parents were grateful for the gesture too. Including Lynn Passini, who wasn’t expecting to spend part of December in the hospital. As hockey fans, she and her family really enjoyed meeting some of the players from the hometown team.
“It was pretty neat. Rachel had some nice smiles while they were here. We haven’t seen that for a couple days so that felt good,” says Passini.
UnityPoint Health – Trinity is proud to partner with the Quad City Storm as the official team hospital and physician for the 2018-2019 season.
