In a July 14 Facebook post, Rep. Tony McCombie reflected on presenting the 2022 DCFS Youth Scholarships to the winners.
"Yesterday, I joined many in Springfield to honor the 2022 DCFS Youth Scholarship Winners," McCombie said. "It was a privilege to present the Pamela Knight Memorial Award to Miss Lillie. This award is annually presented to a scholarship recipient planning to pursue a social work career in honor of Pam's sacrifice and commitment to children. Pamela Knight dedicated her life to protecting children for over 3 decades. She died on Feb. 8, 2018, after succumbing to injuries sustained in the line of duty. #neverforget Lillie is a 2022 graduate."
In June, McCombie asked her constituents to nominate influential women to be considered in the Influential Women of the 71st District contest. "We have all known great women in our lives," McCombie said to NW Illinois News. "Some are mothers or sisters, business owners or educators, but all are inspirations. I want to honor these women and highlight their effect on our lives."
She also expressed her shock and concern following the July 4 shooting in Highland Park. "Please join me in praying for the victims, their families and friends and the cities of Highland Park and Chicago! #highlandpark."
She has also urged youths in the 71st District to join the summer reading contest. The "Reading BUZZ" program is for elementary-aged students who attend school in the 71st District, a Monday release from McCombie's office said. It challenges youths to read at least eight books by Aug. 12, 2022. The program is designed to promote positive reading habits for young students.
"I have always been an avid reader and as you can imagine, goal-driven!" McCombie told Rock Island Today on Monday. "I want kids to join our reading challenge and hopefully make memories they share later in their lives. Reading was a passion of my Grandma Reagans' and we shared a lot of time together reading. This program could be a time for families to unplug, enjoy the quiet and each other's company."
