On January 10, Representative Dan Swanson provided an update on the recent developments at the Illinois Capitol. The 104th General Assembly was sworn in, and Swanson expressed his honor to continue representing the 71st district. He highlighted key issues such as addressing a multi-billion dollar budget deficit while supporting state services for veterans, schools, farmers, and small businesses.

The composition of the Illinois House remains unchanged with 78 Democrats and 40 Republicans. Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch continues as Speaker of the House, while Rep. Tony McCombie serves as the House Republican Leader.

A constitutional amendment has been introduced to allow recalls of state and local government officials. This amendment would expand recall eligibility beyond just the Governor to include all statewide executive elected officials, state legislators, and local government officials. A companion bill aims to establish a Local Government Elected Official Recall Act.

The Illinois Department of Revenue reported over $200 million in unpaid income taxes due to non-filing non-compliance and residency status issues. The Department plans to enhance enforcement efforts regarding sales tax compliance for commercial operations.

In other news, a former jail is set to become a new dispatch center in Galesburg/Knox County, and upcoming events include a Conservation & Farming Workshop on January 15.
