State Sen. Win Stoller (R-Germantown Hills) is celebrating the signing into law of a bill that gives the Village of Dunlap complete control of an unused and impassable portion of the Rock Island Trail.

Senate Bill 84, sponsored by Stoller, gives the Illinois Department of Natural Resources the authority to make the transfer. Village officials have already expressed they plan to take advantage of the opportunity by enhancing accessibility and recreational amenities.

“The Rock Island Trail is a popular destination point for outdoor enthusiasts throughout the state and even the nation,” Stoller said in a press release posted to his website. “The signing of this bill will help improve the experience for everyone who uses the trail, and more importantly it will improve safety.”

As it is, anyone looking to use the trail in the Dunlap area is required to use village streets, which Stoller says is dangerous for pedestrians and motorists alike.

Governor J.B. Pritzker officially signed off on the legislation on Aug. 6.
