Former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan has been found guilty by a federal jury in his corruption trial held in Chicago. Madigan faced accusations of exchanging legislative actions for favors from influential special interest groups.

Evidence presented during the trial, including wiretaps, suggested extensive corruption and dealings involving Madigan and his associates, which prosecutors argued came at the expense of Illinois taxpayers. "I am thankful for the investigators and prosecutors who spent years putting this case together and who finally brought Madigan to justice," a statement read.

Madigan was a significant figure in Illinois politics, serving as Speaker of the House for 35 years. He wielded considerable power to benefit allies and challenge adversaries. With his conviction, there are calls for substantial ethics reform aimed at addressing governmental issues in Springfield.
