This week, Governor Pritzker delivered his annual State of the State address and proposed a $55 billion budget for Illinois, marking the largest spending bill in the state's history. The previous record was also set by Governor Pritzker with over $53 billion last year. Representative Dan Swanson expressed concern over the Governor's approach, stating, "I was shocked that the Governor chose to conclude his speech by comparing half the people to Nazis." He criticized the focus of the address and highlighted issues with economic and fiscal policies.
Swanson also noted that despite recent expectations of a budget deficit, this year's proposal increases spending by $2 billion compared to last year. He commented on potential tax increases and budget strategies as unsustainable. "This budget does not reflect the priorities of Illinois taxpayers and families," he said.
In other news, Illinois is facing a federal lawsuit from the U.S. Department of Justice over its 'sanctuary state' policies. These policies reportedly hinder federal immigration authorities' ability to enforce laws within Illinois. The lawsuit targets specific state and local laws including Illinois' Way Forward Act, TRUST Act, Chicago's Welcoming City ordinance, and Cook County's policy regarding ICE detainers.
The TRUST Act prevents law enforcement from detaining individuals based solely on immigration status or assisting ICE with civil immigration matters. The Department of Justice seeks a ruling declaring these laws invalid due to conflict with federal authority. Swanson mentioned his opposition to such legislation during his tenure in office: "The TRUST Act was enacted in my first year in the House of Representatives. I voted No."
Additionally, free income tax preparation assistance is available for eligible residents ahead of the April 15 filing deadline through collaboration between the Illinois Department of Revenue, IRS, and private coordinators.
