The homeschool bill in Illinois has received national scrutiny following criticism from the Wall Street Journal. The editorial labeled the bill an "assault on home-schoolers," noting the low reading proficiency levels in Chicago Public Schools and questioning the priorities of Illinois lawmakers. The bill requires annual registration with the State Board of Education for non-public schools, including declarations from homeschoolers. Critically, the Journal highlighted significant public opposition, with nearly 50,000 voters reportedly filing witness slips against the act.

Simultaneously, Illinois is facing financial concerns as its ‘Rainy Day Fund’ is depleting, according to a Pew Research Foundation study. With reserves barely covering two weeks of expenses, the fund ranks last in the nation. The state currently holds $2.2 billion, significantly short of the recommended $9 billion. Concerns about financial policies driving away job creators are also noted.

As legislative deadlines approach, the Illinois General Assembly anticipates a hectic schedule. Over 600 bills remain pending with a five-day window for consideration before moving to the Senate. Representative Dan Swanson acknowledges the busy period as the House reconvenes and emphasizes active involvement to process these bills.

Further news includes the Governor's controversial decision to reduce funding for cover crops amidst growing demand and Chicago maintaining its grim title as the country's 'homicide capital' for the 13th consecutive year.
