Legislation aimed at informing the public about alpha-gal syndrome has passed in the Illinois House. Sponsored by State Representative Dan Swanson, the bill proposes that educational resources about the syndrome be made available on the Illinois Department of Public Health's website. Alpha-gal syndrome is an allergy to red meat, triggered by tick bites.

Swanson has a personal reason for backing the bill. "My mom has alpha-gal and it is a very serious situation," he stated. "If she is at a diner or a restaurant and she is served beef or if the chicken she ordered has been on a grill where beef was prepared, she will have a severe allergic reaction."

House Bill 1754 received unanimous support in the House with a 106-0 vote and will now be reviewed by the Senate. Swanson emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting the growing number of cases. "The numbers are increasing. We need to start a strong educational campaign," he asserted.

Residents of the 71st District are encouraged to visit Swanson’s legislative website, repswanson.com, for updates on the General Assembly and upcoming events.
