Some senior drivers in Illinois will soon experience changes in the protocol for renewing their driver's license due to new legislation that has narrowly passed the Illinois House. House Bill 1226 aims to raise the age limit for mandatory driving tests, shifting it from 79 to 87.

The bill was passed with unanimous support, evidenced by the 114-0 vote. It has now moved on to the Senate for further consideration.

The bill also includes a measure allowing immediate family members to engage with the Secretary of State if a person has medical conditions that could impair their ability to drive safely.

"I was a co-sponsor of this bill, which will remove a burdensome requirement from our seniors when they go to renew their driver's license, and which will reduce wait times at the Secretary of State offices," a legislator stated regarding the bill's aims.
