Last week, a coalition of progressive interest groups proposed a plan to introduce $6 billion in new taxes in Illinois. This proposal aims to finance additional spending, following warnings from the state's fiscal watchdog agency about a revenue shortfall. The current fiscal year budget was balanced after Democrats passed significant tax increases at the end of the session. Governor Pritzker has proposed the largest spending bill in state history, necessitating further tax hikes to maintain balance.

The new tax proposal includes increased taxes on capital gains, corporate income, digital advertising, and closing unspecified loopholes. House Republicans criticized the plan as "outrageous and unacceptable," arguing that Illinois must break the cycle of continuous tax and spending increases.

May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month. Representative Dan Swanson highlighted his collaboration with Jennifer Russell, founder of the Illinois Lyme Association, inspired by her daughter Lauryn's battle with Lyme disease. Swanson emphasized the importance of raising awareness and improving treatment for those affected by Lyme disease.

Swanson also attended events honoring military personnel and nurses. At Western Illinois University, six cadets were commissioned as second lieutenants. Additionally, during Nurses Week Convocation at Knox County Courthouse, Swanson honored Ruth Dahlberg Taylor for her service as a nurse during WWII and her contributions to nursing education.

In other news, Illinois state parks have seen their highest visitor numbers in over a decade. Meanwhile, sanctuary state policies are under scrutiny from DHS Secretary and GOP leaders in Illinois. Four cities in Illinois rank among those with the highest property tax rates nationally.
